Rainey Old Boys were fully aware of the task that lay before them when they travelled down to the Dub for their clash with fellow AIL 2A side Queen’s, but they never could have expected to have their line crossed nine times as the confident Queen’s men went on to win 59-7.

Rainey Old Boys registered their first win in the Ulster Conference when they beat Malone 17-10 at Hatrick Park, running in two tries in quick succession and holding on for a morale-boosting victory.
Conditions were much better than anticipated, giving the teams every opportunity to play some rugby. But, with a referee who constantly penalized both sides at the breakdown and for encroaching, it became a stop-start affair. Rainey welcomed back John McCusker from hamstring trouble, but were without prop O'Hagan. The pack, however, did well to more than hold their own against a physical Gibson Park eight. With defences generally on top, Malone were held up after going to the corner with a penalty. Rainey then had a good spell, with McLean going close from over forty yards.

A below strength Rainey Old Boys expected a tough examination when they headed to the Palace Grounds to face Armagh on the opening day of the Ulster Senior League. But, while Rainey played quite well in spells, Armagh simply had too much in their locker for them, romping to a 63-14 victory.
Back in the top section, having somehow slipped down two seasons ago, this Armagh side will be fancied to add this title to the Ulster Senior Cup which they won last season for the third year in a row.
RAINEY 7 - 19 MALONE
Malone were at Hatrick Park on Saturday for a friendly which was much more entertaining than the Harlequins affair the previous week. On a beautiful afternoon, both sides served up some good rugby, with a 19-7 scoreline greatly flattering the Gibson Park men. Rainey probably had the better of it territorially, but just could not convert possession into points.
