Last Saturday, Rainey Old Boys made the long trek to Dr Hickey Park in Wicklow for their first encounter of the season with AIL 2B leaders Greystones. On the wrong end of a 29-7 defeat, Rainey have now dropped to fifth in the league, while Greystones are now firm favourites for promotion to AIL 2A.

In glorious, hazy sunshine last Saturday, Rainey had to come from behind to eventually run out 26 – 15 winners against a lively Galwegians outfit. This win takes them into 4th position in AIL2B, in a chasing pack with fellow Ulster clubs Dungannon and Belfast Harlequins.

Rainey Old Boys had their first win in AIL2B on Saturday, as they edged out a stubborn Sligo side at Strandhill, coming away 13-14 winners thanks to an injury time conversion slotted over by fullback Scott McLean.

Rainey Old Boys travelled to Galway last Saturday for their opening AIL fixture against Galway Corinthians at Corinthian Park. In a rollercoaster 34-33 game, they at least had the consolation that the 2 losing bonus points they came away with could be crucial at the business end of the season.

In beautiful sunny conditions and on an immaculate pitch, Belfast Harlequins and Rainey Old Boys had their first of a minimum of 3 encounters this season, with Rainey gaining an early psychological advantage as they ran out 26-36 winners at Deramore Park. The game had barely gotten underway before Rainey were on the scoresheet, as full-back Faiva scored a spectacularly acrobatic try in the corner. Out-half McLean added a conversion of equal quality from the touchline and Rainey were 7 points to the good.

Rainey Old Boys made it 4 from 4 under the lights at Uprichard Park last Thursday, when then finally overcame a spirited Bangor outfit in the final quarter. The 13-20 bonus-point win leaves them within touching distance of winning Ulster Rugby Premiership Division 2 when the league concludes in the run-up to Christmas. With Instonians beating Dungannon on Saturday, and Rainey beating Instonians a few weeks ago, Rainey need only a single point from the December encounter with their Tyrone-based neighbours to win promotion back to the top flight.
