Only two games were played in Division 2C on a day when the rain disrupted much of the rugby programme.  At Bruff, Navan pulled clear of the Limerick men to win 15-8 after the sides were level at half-time.  This great result keeps them ahead of Sligo, who were impressive 17-13 winners over Rainey Old Boys at Hatrick Park.  Rainey feared that their front-row problems would be a major hurdle to surmount, but it turned out that they played second fiddle in every department on a day they will wish to forget very quickly.  Such was Sligo's dominance, that they should have had the points safely locked away before half-time and it was amazing that Rainey were only a kick of the ball from stealing a most unlikely victory late in the game.

NAVAN 12 - 6 RAINEY

UBL  18th February 2017

Scorers: McLean(2*Pen)

A big crowd gathered at Balreask Old for the much awaited top of the table clash between Navan and second placed Rainey Old Boys and, while there was not a lot of flowing rugby to enthuse about, the closeness of the score kept them interested.  While Rainey were the better team in the first half, Navan gradually gained a stranglehold on the game.  But it took them until the closing minutes before they clinched a 12-6 victory with a penalty try.  From the restart, there was just enough time for Rainey to be awarded a penalty and, from a long way out on the left side, young full-back Scott Mc Lean struck the sweetest of kicks to earn his side a hard-won bonus point, which could prove to be very valuable in a few weeks time.

After a slow start to the season, Navan have won their last five games to lead the table by four points from Rainey and Sligo, who meet at Hatrick Park on March 4.  Rainey are not out of it yet, but the smart money would still be on Navan, although the Meath men face a couple of tricky looking fixtures on the run in.

Match of the Day in Division 2C of the Ulster Bank League was undoubtedly the meeting of Rainey Old Boys and Tullamore under the lights at Hatrick Park. And this cracklng contest lived up to its billing.  On a bltterly cold evening, the crowd was taken on an emotional roller-coaster which helped them brave the elements.  The Co.Offaly side needed the points to overtake Rainey who knew that they faced dangerous opposition.  As play moved into time added on, Tullamore held a two point lead, but Rainey grabbed a dramatic try to claim a vital victory on a 25-22 scoreline.  On the balance of play, Rainey deserved to win, having led 17-7 at the break after facing the wind.

After a long trip to North West Cork with a depleted side,Rainey Old Boys were happy enough to hold on to beat Kanturk 24-16, but their joy will have been tempered by the likelihood of hooker George Fritz being out of action for some time.  The brilliant South African had to retire with a shoulder problem late in the fray which threatens to keep him out of some of the biggest games of the season in the coming weeks.

Rainey blew hot and cold throughout this well contested encounter, but, having established a favourable position going into the final quarter, failed to use the contours of the pitch to pin Kanturk in their own 22'.  A genuine bonus point opportunity was missed as indiscipline and the concession of too many penalties allowed Kanturk to boss the closing minutes.

RAINEY 20 - 17 BRUFF

Two tries from South African hooker George Fritz and the unerring boot of young full-back Scott McLean helped Rainey Old Boys to a vital 20-17 victory over Limerick side Bruff in a tense AIL game at Hatrick Park last Saturday.  While Navan banked an expected bonus point from their game at Seapoint to move above Rainey on points difference, winning their game was all that the Old Boys were concerned with.  It took some very good tackling to swing this game in Rainey's favour, as their out of hand kicking and decision making was poor throughout.  Far too many penalties were conceded in good field positions and, once again, two Rainey players picked up yellow cards.

After seeing their brilliant start to the season end in controversy at Sligo last week, Rainey Old Boys hit rock bottom when second placed Navan beat them 17-13 at Hatrick Park.  Such was the Meath men's dominance, that they should have won by a much greater margin.  It remains a mystery how Rainey picked up a losing bonus point and could even have snatched a lucky winner in time added on.  On a brighter note, they still top Division 2C by two points.  But, with injuries and unavailability now beginning to bite and a long trip to Co Offaly to play third placed Tullamore this week, the coaching staff have plenty to work on between now and then.
