In the first round of the Town’s Cup, Rainey II were well on their way to causing an upset over fancied opponent’s Ballynahinch, before the now all-too-common string of injuries in crucial positions saw them concede two converted tries in the final quarter, finally succumbing to a 17 – 30 defeat. 2nd XV League 1st October 2022
Scorers: S.Hastings(1*Try), Hall(1*Try), Pollock(1*Conv)
On a day of brilliant sunshine and torrential rain at Hatrick Park, Rainey II came up against the brutal effectiveness of a strong opposition scrum, losing 12-35 against Ballymena II. While Rainey were more than a match for the opposition in all other aspects, Ballymena were able to use their scrum to generate penalties at will. Such was the disparity, it is to Rainey’s credit that they only conceded 5 tries, while scoring 2 of their own, with the result still in doubt until well into the final quarter.

Kicking off against a heavier and more experienced ‘Quins IIs, Rainey’s second string coped well with early pressure, their defence more than a match for the home team. Both sides exchanged attacking chances, but it was Rainey who drew first blood after 15 mins, when a visit to The Quins’ 22 earned them a penalty, ably converted by Pollock.
BELFAST HARLEQUINS II 0 - 42 RAINEY II
Provincial 1 29th February 2020
Scorers: McIntosh(1*Try), Friel(1*Try), N.Hastings(1*Try), Doherty(1*Try), Millar(1*Try), G.Hall(1*Try), Evans(6*Conv)
In an echo of their last league outing, Rainey II started away from home, playing into the teeth of Storm Jorge as they took on Belfast Harlequins II at Deramore. With a biting gale blowing straight across the pitch making it a day for the short-range game, they scored three converted tries either side of the half to clinch another bonus-point win.
As the elements deteriorated with every passing minute, the referee opted to start the game 5mins early, with the result that supporters arriving on time missed Rainey’s opening score, Prop McIntosh barging over between the posts from short range. Out-half Evans, who had a superlative day with the boot, duly knocked over the first of his six conversions despite the conditions.
