Rainey III, after taking some time to settle, improved as the game progressed to run out easy 38-10 over Coleraine at Hatrick Park in Regional League North East. The Lodge Road men were well in the game until the final quarter, but made too many handling mistakes as they ran out of steam.
The experience of Michael Wilson at scrum-half was to be a major factor and he opened the scoring early in the contest. Out-half Gavin Pollock converted and kicked well throughout. Feathers soon added another score, but the visitors replied and there was nothing between them with Coleraine offloading well without ever looking a real threat. Rainey came close late in the half when Pollock was downed just short and a charge down saw Coleraine in further difficulty. But, right on half-time, Quinn was well-placed to take a crossfield kick from Pollock and weave his way down the wing. Quick ball from his support allowed the pack to take it on to the corner where McCullagh drove over.
A quickly taken penalty brought hooker Andrews a soft try and minutes later a terrible loopy pass presented wing Nelson with another gift score. Coleraine then helped themselves to a gift score as Rainey switched off, but Mulholland took a clean catch at the tail to walk over for the simplest of tries in the closing minutes.
